Animal Abuse
“We have more to learn from animals than animals have to learn from us.”
If you had to choose between feeding an animal or leaving them in a shelter what would you choose? Majority would answer without hesitation and choose the option of just feeding them once or maybe even twice, and never again. It’s almost like giving them hope for a new beginning and leaving them in the darkness again. There are people who wouldn’t even care to answer because they’re either too busy in their lives, or are just not interested.
When a person gets abused, it becomes a political issue. When a star dies, the whole country cries. When a person gets raped, it becomes a national issue. But when an animal gets abused, killed and raped? There are hardly some channels that bring the news forward. And even if the news comes forward, it is not given recognition.
Can anyone tell me why?
“Because human lives are more important.” often have I heard this comment when asking this question. Another said, “The life of a human is more important than some animal, how could you even ask such a thing?
So, I’d like to congratulate everyone with the same opinion, our choice has just caused the extinction of the animals.”
Some days ago, we heard about the death of a pregnant elephant that was searching for food in Kerala. Was the news viral? Yes. Did it come in front of the public eye? Yes. A 40-year-old man who allegedly sodomized a female stray dog, in the Indian state of Maharashtra’s Thane district, last week, was arrested only after tweets about the incident went viral.
Animal abuse is one of the most important topics for us to discuss, but it’s also among the most difficult to contemplate. Animal lovers can’t understand the psychology behind animal abuse, yet it happens every day. In many cases, abuse isn’t as obvious as one might think. For instance, a dog owner who leaves the animal outside in 100-degree temperatures without water or shade all day is abusing that dog, yet there might not be outward signs of the abuse.
Animal abuse also often takes place far from the public’s prying eyes. You wouldn’t know if your neighbor was abusing an animal unless he or she brought the activity outside where you could see it.
That’s why we need to understand animal abuse, break down what it entails, and fight against it at every opportunity. If nobody speaks up or stops the abuse, it will continue to occur.
Many of us don’t have a minimum knowledge about this crime. Thereby, here’s everything you need to know about it.
What Is Animal Abuse?
Animal abuse is the treatment of any animal that causes physical or psychological damage. That’s a pretty broad definition, but we’ll break down some of the most common manifestations in a minute.
What you need to know right now is that animals are sentient beings. They experience fear, pain, and other negative emotions just like your pets experience joy, love, and contentment.
How can you know that an animal has been abused?
Besides witnessing the abuse first-hand, it can be hard to tell when there’s cause for concern. The following are likely signs of animal abuse:
Tucked tail, flinches at human contactUnexplained fractures or limpingUnprovoked aggression, whining, or whimperingOverly submissive (rolling onto back, tail tucked, urinating)Suddenly avoiding any physical contactAttempts to bite or scratch when pettedSome signs that an animal is being neglected can include:
Changes in appearance, such as fur loss, dull texture, or mangeVery skinny or sickly lookingObvious wounds or injuries that remain untreatedBeing left in a kennel or chained outside exclusively
The worst part is that the law charges Rs.50 for killing an animal as a penalty, and government hospitals charge Rs.10000 for treatments. From past 60 years, the laws have not been upgraded, still the perpetrator pays a small penalty charge and they are left on bail.
On the other side, when you go to treat the injured animal, on the first word they will ask you deposits or provide you with the estimates of overall bills and expenses.
Even government hospitals are charging the same expenses. Why? Government hospitals should be the one who should provide preliminary to surgical aids with cost effective treatment. Oh, by the way, they lack hygiene management. The management is either busy with their own life or having lunch or breakfast when there is a critical accident.
Why’s there so much ignorance to implement changes in the PCA Act? So many cases have taken place, yet the government is ignoring them. Why? No answers.
What can you do?
There’s no one way to stop animal abuse. However, when more people get involved in the fight against animal cruelty, abusers get exposed and held accountable for their crimes. Additionally, battling animal cruelty with your wallet sends a clear message to companies that use animals for testing or human food.
What does the Government need to do?
The government needs to amend strict laws and immediate punishments for animal cruelties in India. But, unfortunately, religion has won over humanity. The Acts of NRC and CAA are more important than the lives of innocent people.
Reminder: OUR FIRST RELIGION SHOULD BE HUMANITY, BUT WE HUMANS HAVE MADE IT AN ISSUE AND NOW IT ACTS AS A DIVIDING LINE.
“All creatures are deserving of a life free from fear and pain.”
